In a year filled with great R&B releases ( Frank Ocean, Usher, SWV, Miguel, Keyshia Cole), AliciaвЂ™s Girl On Fire falls in the middle of the road and is nowhere near as good as her last album.Д«ut I could have predicted that. YouвЂ™ll find yourself enjoying it in the moment but if someone asks you to name highlights, not much comes to mind. It sort of reminds me of attending a jazz session. With the exception of вЂњFire We Make,вЂќ that statement holds true for the entire album. But these tracks, along with вЂњLimitedlessвЂќ all suffer from the same dilemma вЂ“ nice, pleasant songs that will immediately be forgotten once your iPod jumps to the next track. вЂњThatвЂ™s When I KnewвЂќ is similarly naked: itsвЂ™ just Alicia, acoustic licks and not much else. The remaining tracks like вЂњ101вЂќ and вЂњTears Always WinвЂќ find Alicia in her element вЂ“ backed by her precious piano. Anyway, Maxwell and Alicia sizzle so seamlessly that IвЂ™m shocked that it took them this long to collaborate. CBS is the television home of the Grammys, so it is only fitting that CBS This Morning gets the annual first dibs on the announcement of the nominees. Keys didnt have chicken soup on hand, but she did offer warm TLC to Gayle. Thankfully the album quickly recovers with вЂњFire We Make,вЂќ a slow-burner with Maxwell thatвЂ™s a match made in heaven вЂ“ with more fire. It really accentuates the growth portrayed in the song. The intro gently eases into вЂњBrand New Me,вЂќ an affirmation of strength that climaxes in an explosion of percussion. ItвЂ™s a beautiful opening that showcases AliciaвЂ™s calling card вЂ“ her impressive pianist skills. But just a few seconds into the intro, вЂњDe Novo Adagio,вЂќ destiny gets slapped in the face. So according to my calculations, I shouldnвЂ™t be very fond of Girl On Fire, AliciaвЂ™s first album as a wife and mother. Similarly, I wasnвЂ™t in love with 2007вЂ™s As I Am but I loved The Element of Freedom in вЂ™09. However, her sophomore set, The Diary of Alicia Keys, is one of my favorite albums of the past decade.
